Forest Schools- Into the Woods
an Investigation in England, Germany, Denmark, Scotland, and the Netherlands

A journey investigating Forest Schools across the globe.

Day Two- A day of rest and exploration

9/3/2018

Day two- I was happy to get extra sleep to rid myself of jet lag.  Today I got the chance to explore the city of Landau which will be my home for the next 14 days. After the first week I head out from the shelter of my host family and stay in a hostel near a remote Forest School.

Speaking of my host family, they are completely lovely.  They live in a beautiful home that is open, energy efficient and is in a great location (50 meters from the zoo, 100 meters from a large park, walking distance from the town center, and a bike path in their back yard).  The family is kind and welcoming.  The husband of my host is a pastor in the church below.  It is beautiful and seems to be the central focus of the town where they enjoy concerts, performances, have preschool, etc.

The town is exactly how you would picture it... very much like the Germany Pavilion at Disney's EPCOT Center.  It is beautiful.  It seems like a movie set. Many of the old tutor style and medieval buildings are still in place and it is full of history.

Landau has an amazing park that was once a military fortress.  The local university is also within the walls as well as the zoo.

Landau is the location of Anne Frank's Grandfather's home.  It is an old Medieval livery and it is very impressive.  Currently it is a coffee shop, which was not open when I went there today.

Lastly, Landau is home to a lot of wonderful public art, from present day and dating back Centuries.  It is all pretty fabulous.  While this day has been great, I am anxiously awaiting tomorrow, where I get to visit the first of 4 Waldkindergartens.

    Who I am

I am an Associate Professor at the College of Charleston and a former public school teacher of 15 years and now the Department Chair of Teacher Education,  This blog began as a documentation for my sabbatical in 2018. It was a journey through Germany  Netherlands.

Since then I have visited Forest Schools in England, Copenhagen, the USA and Scotland. I investigate how the arts are infused in their daily curriculum.

A side bar- I feel like I am playing pokemon.. I got to get them all. Each location is so different, but they alll have the same concept. Learning through play and a deep appreciation for nature. And the arts are a serious part of each location as well.
    DANKE!!!!
